Keith Winery up for sale, got a small fortune to spare?

Keith Winery in St. Helena, California is up for sale, which is great news…if you’re an ambitious entrepreneur with $80 million to spare. I know that this piece of real estate is way beyond most people’s budgets, and the hefty price tag gives you a clue as to why the average wine connoisseur doesn’t venture into the wine making business. To be fair, the $80 million estate does include 1025 acres of land (105 of which are already planted in vines) and an established winery.

The property has been on the market since November of last year, along with several other properties that were owned by the late Ed Keith. Keith, who was a well-known real estate investor and businessman from California, passed away in September of 2006. The winery is relatively new, with its first vintage taking place in 1999 and its first cases of wine sold in 2002 under the Catacula Lake label. The eventual buyer will acquire more than just 1,000+ acres of land in Chiles Valley; he or she will also gain a winery that exceeds 23,000 square feet in size, 16,000 square feet of underground caves, three lakes, five homes, and a barn.

Keith previously ran a summer camp on the estate, venturing into the business of wine in the late 1990s with Catacula Lake Winery. Recently rebranded as Keith Winery, the facility is licensed to produce up to 25,650 cases of wine a year and currently turns out Zinfandel, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petite Sirah, and Cabernet Franc.
